1 And they took Joshua, and led him away. He bearing his cross went forth into a
place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
2 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming
out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.
3 And
there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed
and lamented him.
4 But
Joshua turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem,
weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children
5 For, behold, the days are
coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that
never bare, and the paps which never gave suck
6 Then shall they begin to
say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us
7 For if they do these
things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?
[ for they had laid on themselves curse of the cross ]
8 And they bring him unto the place Golgotha.
9 And
they gave him to drink wine (vinegar) mingled with myrrh (gall): and when he had
tasted thereof, he would not drink.
10 And there were also
two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.
11 And
Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JOSHUA OF
NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
12 This title then read many
of the Jews: for the place where Joshua was crucified was nigh to the city: and
it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
13 Then said
the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but
that he said, I am King of the Jews.
14 Pilate answered, What I have written I
have written.
